I sat watching the crumbling flakes of a fire
The blackening smolder of the life I had once sired
Inside me alone now diseased truth just rots
No need to take it with me when I get to the gates of DUAT
At last I’d found how to take a secret to your grave
The man walked in on a sodden remnant of rain
His thin smile in half-curl put a thread of ice in my veins
Before I could speak he said, “is it presumptuous to guess
You are the type of man who plays things close to the chest
I know you know what it is I speak about”
He’d seen through to the rash inside me
Tempted my forbidden itch
Desperate, I devoted my ears to catch every word
“The path to sinlessness is not for those light in the guts
Divine judgement passes through eyes that must be forced shut”
He carried on and on as if he’d never have somewhere else to be
And his syrup sweet words made a rabid disciple of me
“Confide in yourself, for there’s no one else you can trust”
I took up with Doctor Diamond
Snuffed up the rust and the dust from the blood-slick mine
She said, “I never know when you’ve gone far enough”
His maxims realized in my hands
How good it felt to be scratched
Unseen by the concerned and condemning alike
I stood and scattered the ash pile to the four winds
No point in staying to consider dead dividends
Back to the thrush of the great, the fine, and the fair
Where I caught a feather falling as it twisted about through the air
And I felt it would outweigh my heart on the scale

Dead Girl
06:11
|
|||
See the laughing girl in the black dress
Malefic spirit that glides through daydreams
But oh, I’m in love with that dead girl
One of the hexes she cast upon me
Now the stench of death lingers sweet
And my time is taken up by grief
Crystal blues eyes behind my reflection
See her smile just like a thief
That such a brief, chance collision
Could bring a lifetime of perdition
Tell me the words to break the spell
I just wish that she’d let me be
Because they say her heart is still beating
Oh, I guess she’s only really dead to me
Wrote a poem for the dead girl
And it was laughed out of the room
Tried to put to rest the memories
All of the roles we had assumed
Then one day I saw her bright and clear
Though that she’d risen from the grave
She said, “who is really haunting who here?
You’ve grown too taciturn to save”
And as she turned away in disgust
I felt my own yellowed bones and flesh of dust
Tell me the words to break the spell
I just wish that she’d let me be
Because there’s two hearts, once were competing
Oh, now one’s dead and one’s beating free

Third Set of Teeth
03:13
|
|||
I was the wolf whose stomach was full of stones
Cold sweat, the walls contracting
The new species moves in, burns the lining
Metabolizes blood
Life into life
One by one, bone by bone, the grip releases
The blood I swallow sustains like the food I can’t chew
And I’m growing my third set of teeth
And I’m growing my third set of teeth
Cutting through, they are jagged
Now water bloats my pale skin and bread goes right through
Learning to hunt vermin takes dedication—
But it’s human blood I dream about
Living under electric suns has its perks
I’ve never been thinner and I still watch five hours of tv a day, hunt the nights
Biding my time
Biding my time…
But it’s not like I’m aging as I wait for my mind to go

Life comes and goes on different scales down here
A spider’s like an elephant to the meager troupe of ants
Now your own thoughts are irrelevant, it’s time to join in the chant
Your nerves are throbbing but your mind is clear
No soul in your abdomen, but conviction in your eyes
Just this feeling that you have to win, watch the colony rise
Cause you’re breathing Queenie’s pheromones
As the whining thrill rises in tone
Let it crawl, let it crawl
Our swarm queen must have it all
And we’re happy to serve this administration at all
Let it crawl, let it skitter
Turn those mandibles around, don’t be bitter
And we’re happy to serve her administration…
The enemy lies up ahead, you don’t ask for their name
It’s something that you’ve known at heart, why they must be killed
And when all their limbs are torn apart, satisfaction’s fulfilled
Now the war is won and the territory’s claimed
She signals for the colony to begin marching back
You’re so caught up in the following, can’t sniff blood in your tracks
Cause you’re breathing Queenie’s pheromones
As the whining trill rises in tone
Let it crawl, let it crawl
Our swarm queen must have it all
And we’re happy to serve this administration at all
Let it crawl, let it climb
A drone’s life is so sublime
And we’re happy to serve her administration for life,
Short sweet life!
Ask specific questions, you will get vague answers
In this conga line you’re just one teeny-tiny dancer
But Queenie will love you forever…
Let it crawl, let it crawl
Our Queenie must have it all
And we’re happy to serve this administration at all
Let it crawl, let it skitter
Turn those mandibles around, don’t be bitter
And we’re happy to serve her administration…

Try to put your arms around me and I will only writhe and squirm
I only bury hatchets on my own specific terms
Why believe there’s good in anything, like hope for humanity
I can’t come down from something like intoxicating vanity
Oh, I only stand to show…
There’s no hope for the misanthropes
Sigh, and move on to the next one, cause I am a lost cause
I feel just like Diogenes, making truth from a dirty box
Don’t cry I am just attempting to right some of my wrongs
Tie me to that good old social rope and pull me along
Oh, but everybody goes…
There’s no hope for the misanthropes
You think I have it so good, don’t you know?
If Hell is other people, then Hell’s got to go
I’m sorry I get so spiteful when I’m left all alone
I was told when I was very small about the size of my brain
Too shy to break out of the cranium, when you parade I’ll bring rain
I don’t really hate you all, I just like to believe I’m clever
Find me a spirit kindred, whose trust I can never sever
Oh and everybody knows…
There’s no hope for the misanthropes

Tell Me What Scares You
04:13
|
|||
Tremble, tremble but don’t you scream
I can promise you that it won’t invade your dreams
I can take the offending feeling away
You don’t know me but I want to know you
Want to feel every anxiety you’ve accrued
Let fear paint red streaks upon a world so gray
I think you’ll find that I am kind
Just let me read between your lines
Won’t you tell me what is it that scares you?
Is it spiders and bumps in the night?
Is it smallpox or nuclear warfare?
Is it a dread that you just can’t describe?
I will take your fear away
Rumble, rumble the storm cloud looms
Shadows of bogeymen flash across your room
I can take all the nightmares away with light
You don’t know me but I want to know you
I really can be so supportive and true
Just remember to keep your eyes shut tight
Won’t you tell me what is it that scares you?
Is it lies from the lips of a lover?
Is it psychos and stalkers and freaks?
Is it your own father or mother?
I will take your fear away
I will take you away
I will take you away
I will take you away

Meadowlark, don’t be afraid of the dark
Meadowlark, don’t be afraid
Meadowlark, don’t be afraid of the dark
Meadowlark, don’t be afraid
Death is a place that arrives to us all
But we’re protected in frames on the wall
Garden snake, keep the good friends that you make
Garden snake, keep your good friends
Garden snake, keep the good friends that you make
Garden snake, keep the good friends
Other souls preserve all the songs that you are
Pieces of you in their canopic jars
Little fish, it’s time for your birthday wish
Little fish, make a wish
Little fish, it’s time for your birthday wish
Little fish, make it a good wish
Each second’s gift is a treasure or trap
You don’t have to travel without a map
Meadowlark
Don’t be afraid.
